JOANN’S Closures Loom – Yarn Options Bloom at Miss Purl: Explore Our New Yarn Selections and Maker Events

JOANN Fabric and Craft Store bankruptcy saga is a bummer for all of us DIY enthusiasts who relied on these big box craft stores for our yarn and craft supplies. Since the news about JOANN has grown more ominous and specific store closures are in sight, everyone seems to be talking about what went wrong for them. But what about us, the customers? With fewer big box craft stores left, Miss Purl is here to ensure you have convenient access for all your yarn and crafting needs.

Miss Purl was started three years ago to ensure we have access to a local spot for yarn and crafting support, especially for those south of Roosevelt Road. From our beginnings, we do affordable and fabulous well, all day. That's the South Side way, am I right?

Miss Purl: An Oasis for Crafters in a Yarn Desert

Miss Purl prioritizes access to affordable and fun yarns for all your projects. I want your business and am committed to bringing you the brands that matter most to your heart and wallet. It’s not just about yarn; it's about supporting our crafting community and making sure what we need to create is accessible. While Michaels and JOANN have been great, the personal attention and care at Miss Purl is something special. We provide complimentary pattern support to all our customers, and we’ve got a robust monthly education and event calendar. Oh, and did I mention the over eight hours of free weekly social stitching and support? Yep, it’s a thing at Miss Purl.

Do me a solid and spread the word!

Exciting New Yarn Alternatives Await!

Let’s talk about the new yarns on our shelves! Miss Purl has fantastic options perfect for all your projects. We’ve added outstanding acrylic and wool-blends that are super durable, easy to care for, and come in a dazzling array of colors that will make your projects pop. I know how important it is to find comparable yarns to your favorite brands at JOANN / big box craft store. That's why Miss Purl has been on a mission to curate alternative sources. A kaleidoscope of acrylic and wool-blend fibers has been added to my shelves, ready for you to covet, stash, and stitch with joy. Here are some yarns found at JOANN and my new favorite alternatives now in stock at Miss Purl:

Lion Brand Anti-Stitch Pilling, Vanna’s Choice (worsted 4)

Try Uptown Worsted – This yarn is incredibly soft and light, with deep, saturated colors that are totally on-trend. Forget the usual blue, red, green, and yellow – there’s hot pink is the hautest magenta you’ll ever see. And at just $8, it’s a fantastic value. If you love Vanna’s Choice or Basic Stitch, you’ll find Uptown Worsted to be a perfect match. We now have more than ten colors in stock.

Caron Simply Soft ( DK 3/ worsted 4)

Try Sirdar Elements DK has that recognizable sheen and drape you love in Simply Soft. Elements muted jewel tones drew me right in. Elements will be at Miss Purl on February 21. Plus, it's made from a blend of TENCEL™ Lyocell and wool, making it lightweight, sustainable, and perfect for summer projects. Lyocell is made from wood pulp.

Try Berroco Vintage Baby – Even though it’s called “Baby,” this yarn is a workhorse DK (3) wool-blend fiber. It’s perfect for all sorts of projects, not just baby items. Berroco Vintage Baby contains a higher wool content than even Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease, giving it a luxurious feel while still being machine washable and soft to the touch. The quality and feel are top-notch, and at just $6 a skein, it’s a steal! Need a special color? We can drop ship it directly to your home. If you’re a fan of Wool-Ease, or Simply Soft or JOANN’s Big Twist, you’ll love Berroco Vintage Baby. Available February 21 at Miss Purl.

Patons Classic Wool, Lion Brand Wool Ease (worsted 4)

Try Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted Superwash – This yarn is a 100% superwash wool, also in a worsted weight. It’s machine washable, making it super convenient for everyday projects. Deluxe Worsted Superwash is known for its springy texture and vibrant color palette. It’s perfect for garments, accessories, and home décor projects. Plus, it’s OEKO-TEX® certified, ensuring it’s free from harmful substances in the superwash process. Deluxe Worsted Superwash is a level-up option for your projects, offering durability and a beautiful range of colors. The key difference is that Deluxe Worsted Superwash is a machine washable wool, making it a bit easier to care for, while wool-ease is a wool blend that uses acrylic as the primary base (for washability and care).

Lion Brand Thick and Quick (6)

Try Sirdar Bonus Super ChunkyIf you're looking for the best value without compromising on softness, Sirdar Bonus Super Chunky is the clear winner! Made from 100% acrylic, it's not only soft and easy to care for but also incredibly budget-friendly at around $6 per skein, every day without a coupon. This makes it an excellent choice for those who want to create beautiful, chunky projects without breaking the bank. Plus, its easy-care nature means your creations will be durable and long-lasting. So, for a fantastic blend of affordability and quality, Sirdar Bonus Super Chunky is the way to go! In-stock February 21 at Miss Purl.

We carry Sirdar Happy, a cotton DK (3) weight yarn that comes in mini skeins for less than the price of a cupcake. Perfect for all your small amigurumi projects. Snag a few skeins and register for our $20 Drop-in Clinic. It’s an under $30 game-changer. You get expert advice and support for your creations and become part of a vibrant community of crafters.
