Color Combinations That Work Wonders in Knitting and Crochet
I wanted a fresh color palette to knit my version of Courtney Flynn’s (@flynnknit) New Horizon Sweater. It feels citrus-y with the lemon trim and grapefruit accents. Peruse the New Horizon Sweater’s project page on Ravelry and you’ll see how the various color palettes change the sweater’s mood and style. I knit my sweater with Kraeo Uncle Mulberry (worsted). Kristin Oldach is the master dyer behind KraeO. With a masters in Painting from The School of the Art Institute Chicago and a decade of experience in the knitwear business, Kristin brings a studied and applied understanding of color and design to KraeO. She has developed a line of complex neutrals to pair with vibrant pops of color that are both unique and wearable. Check out Kraeo here. Miss Purl is a Kraeo stockist.
Do These Colors Go Together Miss Purl?
I’m often asked, "Do these colors go together?" This question can mean different things to different people. Some may look for harmony and calm, while others seek contrast and energy. When colors "go together," they can either create a sense of balance and tranquility or complement each other in a way that radiates energy and excitement. For this article, we are “talmbout” colors trios that make us “feel a lil somethin’ somethin.’ Know what I mean?
Complementary colors, for example, are pairs of colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. These colors naturally enhance each other and create a vibrant, dynamic look. Think of sports and school teams, which almost always use complementary colors to create a sense of energy and excitement.
Analogous colors, on the other hand, are groups of colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. These colors usually match well and create serene and comfortable designs. They are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye. Even though each color by itself is a bundle of energy, think of how familiar the Dunkin' Donuts color palette of pink and orange is. This combination creates a comfort and relatability that is appealing.
In knitwear, unexpected color combinations often yield the most exciting and drool-worthy pieces. Don't play it safe! When working with colorwork, stripes, chevrons, Fair Isle, or mosaic patterns, maximum contrast is what will get you “gassed up” every time you don your finished make. Imagine being bathed in compliments: "Ooohhhh, did you make that? What pattern is that? OMG!" You know we L-I-V-E for the maker compliment stage, so go bold and let your creativity shine!
1. Vermillion Orange, Marigold Yellow and Lilac Purple
Orange you glad the red undertone doesn’t overpower? (smile) I love how the the orange-red marinates into the yellow. It almost feels golden! Now, this might not be the first color pairing that comes to mind, but together, they create a vibrant and unexpected look. To me, both colors evoke the stunning hues of a western sunset. Imagine a beautifully knitted shawl with alternating stripes. The bold, fiery tones of Vermillion are perfectly balanced by the cheerful and bright Marigold, could make a shawl glow.
2. Ice Blue, Burgundy Wine and Dark Teal
The Burgundy Wine and Dark Teal feel moody and deep like a poetry jam set. The cool, crisp tones of the Ice Blue is an upbeat contrast, like snapping my fingers or tapping my feet at said poetry jam. This pairing is the jam for Fair Isle colorwork in sweaters or hats, where the intricate patterns can showcase the dramatic interplay of these colors. The result would be sophisticated and eye-catching piece that stands out in any wardrobe.
3. Lavender Purple and Chartreuse Green
Lavender and chartreuse are each a sassy statement on their own. Paired together, they create a dynamic duo. Lavender's allure pulls me in and that zesty chartreuse flirts. This palette is totally calling my name in a mosaic crochet pattern for a throw. The geometric design can play up this haute thang, ooh especially since that cool dark grey can the play the outline.
4. Mocha Mousse Brown, Ultramarine Blue-green and Dusty Rose Pink
Mocha Mousse, the Pantone Color of the Year, pairs unexpectedly well with Ultramarine and Dusty Rose. This trio creates an intelligent color play. Both the jewel tone of the ultramarine and the pastel in the pink is romantic. Add the Mocha and it feels like a long-time, nostalgic love. I think a yoke stitched in this color play would be delicious. How about you?
5. Midnight Black, Ice White, and Electric Blue
For those who are hesitant to use bright colors, this combination can bring you into the fold. Nice and easy. Pairing Midnight Black and Ice White with a pop of Electric Blue creates a chic look. The neutrals subdue the brightness of the blue. The punch of a bright accent feels modern and stylish. Imagine a shawl with black and white stripes, accented with vivacious blue details. This combination is perfect for adding a touch of color without overwhelming your project.
6. Lipstick Siren Red, Fuscia Pink, and Mocha Mousse
For a winter pick me up, experiment with introducing milk chocolate browns to bright colors. Think chocolatier dessert menu. Lipstick Siren Red and Fuscia Pink combined with Mocha Mousse is decadent. While the Mocha offers grounding effect, and the red and pinks are sirens calling to the the red undertone in the brown. A striped cowl in this palette? So good and yummy.
